I collaborated with this client on a line of retail gun cases. The design language would be applied to a variety of sizes. There were a handful of requirements; the cases needed to be stackable, accommodate an off-the-shelf draw latch, have a carrying handle, and a place for a padlock and wheels. They also wanted an O-ring gasket for water resistance and a pressure relief valve for air pressure equalization.
My design approach was to let the case’s functionality drive the aesthetic. I added raised bands on the case’s exterior for structure and to emphasize how rugged the case was. These also provided multiple ways to grip the case. I also added embossed areas where badges for different retailers could be applied on the case exterior. I intended to keep the design as simple and clean as possible so that it would not look dated over time, and I am glad I did. Years later, this case is still for sale at major outdoor retailers.
